Surfing on the east side of Oahu is much more casual than it is on the North Shore or in Town. The prevailing winds mean that there is surf on the east side throughout most of the year. There are several beginner surf boards at the house for your use. Surf boards can also be rented at the Crouching Lion In Ka'a'awa and at several places along the highway between the house and the North Shore.
There is pretty good surf right in front of the house, but it is a fair paddle to get to the reef. You are guaranteed to have it all to yourself though. About a mile to the left on Kamehameha Highway is Kahana Bay Beach Park which is a good spot for children to learn to surf. The waves are seldom more than knee-high and break close to the beach. Travel another four miles in the same direction past Ka'a'awa and you will see a surf spot called Kualoa Surf Gate (if you get to the Kualoa Ranch entrance then you went too far). Here there is an inside break which is good for beginners at about knee-high to waist-high. There is also an outside break for those with intermediate skills which breaks about waist-high to head-high. Most people go right because the wave will take you to a channel which makes it easy to paddle back out. There is also a left break here. If you go a few hundred yards north you will be a Rainbows which is a slightly faster and harder breaking right. From the water there is a great view of Ka'a'awa Valley where Jurassic Park and many other motion pictures and television shows were filmed. Between Kahana Bay and Kualoa Surf Gate is Swanse (just across the road from Uncle Bobo's cafe). Here there is a very hollow left-breaking wave for experienced surfers.
The North Shore is about fifteen miles from the house. Here you will find some of the most famous surfing sites in the world, such as Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, and Bonzai Pipeline. In the winter season, the waves can reach twenty feet. The North Shore can be crowded when the surf is good and, for the most part, it is no place for beginners. There are numerous surfing contests held on the North Shore each winter and it is entertaining to watch the events.
At the house, you will find a guide book to Oahu surfing spots. The local TV news and weather reports always include a surf report for the following day and will note if there are any contests being held.
