We raise both tside-view ranchu and Japanese-style top-view ranchu. The top-view and side-view ranchu are really separate varieties these days because they have been selected for different characteristics over so many generations. In Japan, top-view ranchu are very popular and there are large goldfish shows/competitions devoted exclusively to this one variety. All top-view ranchu are either red or red/white.
We imported exceptional top-view ranchu breeding stock from Japan. They are Monden bloodline. Look for a strong tail which folds as the fish swims and then opens like a flower when they stop. The tail tube or caudal peduncle should be broad and strong. As the ranchu matures, the head growth or wen develops. The head growth should give the head a squared-off shape when viewed from above. A good ranchu will appear both strong and graceful when swimming.
