The defining characteristic of pearlscales is the convex calcified scales. They also have a very fat or rounded body shape. We are raising two types of pearlscale; crown pearlscale and ping-pong or golf ball pearlscale. The crown pearlscale has a head growth but it is usually one to three large masses instead of the raspberry-like head growth of oranda. The head growth takes quite a while to develop. You can see it starting when the crown pearlscale is nine to twelve months of age, but does does not really become substantial until almost two years of age. Our crown pearlscale do not usually become quite as round as our ping pong pearlscale. However, the crown pearlscale seem to be more robust and hardy. They are as easy to keep as oranda.
